Posters

This set of submissions for the Matcha design competition uses a combination of hand-created elements and code-based randomization to capture the Matcha spirit. We first hand-drew elements inspired by upcoming Matcha events, and Asian culture. We then converted them to line art on the computer, and fed them through a custom Flash-based app, which generated compositions that we could later use as a basis for our final posters. As a side note, the typeface we used for "Matcha" was created by a San Francisco based typographer and designer. Have a look at the video below to see the process in action.

Poster Generator

This process generates layouts of our illustrations in creative ways, and allows the user to 'play' with the layouts through simplified editing, in a standard web browser. Elements can be moved, removed, and shuffled in depth. It's modular, and really easy to change what's being laid out; by stating colors, backgrounds, and swapping out artwork. It's a lot of fun to see how arbitrary layouts take shape. Compositions come out of the program that a designer might never dream of doing. And because it's all based in Flash, we can deliver the experience via a standard browser. Output from the app remains in vector format, lending itself to print executions.

Interactive Animation

The poster generator got us thinking... wouldn't it be cool if the elements were animated? And what if you could interact with the elements via motion detection? Fun stuff. Add the element of 3D space (via Papervision 3D in Flash) and you've got yourself a fun, interactive installation. We were specifically thinking of these projections happening during the Matcha DJ events.

Banners

A sample showing the modular, scalable nature of the generator and the artwork. We all know San Francisco is a connected city, and targeted web banner ads could certainly drive attendance.

T-Shirts

Since our output from the randomizer is vector, it lends itself to a multitude of applications. In this case, it's a t-shirt design.

Team

We are a handful of designers and programmers who like to make things that are... well, cool. Drop a line, we like feedback!
